A brand new Raku Kiln!

Posted by mysculptureclass on December 14, 2010 at 1:50 PM

We just ordered a new raku kiln for the studio.  It is a updated version of the one I bought 10 years ago and have fired hundreds and hundreds of times: The Clamshell raku kiln from Clay Art Center in Tacoma Washington.   This is what it looks like:

The beauty of this kiln is that one person can do it alone, the heat goes up but you can unload from the side, you don't have to reach into anything, and that you can open one side at a time to conserve heat.

I have fired in many of different raku kilns while doing demos and teaching workshops around the country.  This is the best one I have found.

We should get it within a couple of weeks and have decided that the first couple of  loads that we fire will become the "paying for the kiln sale".  We will take pictures and have an event.  Watch for details!

Oh What a opertune moment. I am shopping for a raku kiln right now and haven't settled on any that meet my needs. Also I probably will fire "sola" and have pieces up to 22 inches high. Do you know the height dimentions of your kiln? What model is it? I am close to Tacoma. Would love to see it or find a used one. Will it take a propane tank or are you hooked up to gas? We have so much rain here, I'd like to be able to move it back under cover when finished.
Hope you are doing well, Roberta Babcock, Beaverton, Or

I think you should definitely call and talk to joe. They can custom build them any way you like. They are propane fired. The wheels are great! Let me know what you do...we'll swap kiln stories. :)
