My Sculpture Class

Learn to sculpt onlne

One thing I learned this year

For years I have been thinking about and imagining sculpting "Conversation with Myself" so that the small figure would be lifesize.  This year I finally did it.  I had already quit "real" job.  I did not have the money to cast it.  I wasn't sure how I could build it safely, and I definitely did not have someone to buy it.

But, with the deadline to show it at "Artprize"  and the encouragement, expertise, and help of my studiomate ,friend, and love, it happened.  We did it.

In the midst of all that anxiety, sweat, and fear. We did it.

That is when the amazing stuff started to happen.  My foundry and Welding people broke land and speed records to have it finished the morning of the Sculpture in the park show in Loveland, Colorado.  Both the big local papers had pictures of it in them.

The response was all that I had hoped for, and I sold enough at the show to pay those guys that worked so hard for me to get it finished.

We took it to another show where the reception was just as wonderful, and then installed it at ArtPrize.  While I didn't win any of the top 10, I was in the top 25 in my neighborhood.  I got to exhibit it at Grand Rapids Public Museum, and while we were driving to pick it up, it sold.  IT SOLD!

So I am learning.  I am a slow study, but I am beginning to get it.  I have to do it anyway; whatever "it" is. Even when I am afraid, even if the old tapes in my head say not to.  I need to trust that if I build it they will come, and if I follow what my heart tells me to do I won't be sorry.   Even before it sold I was so happy that I did it, and so appreciative of the support I had to make it happen.  So now I am casting #2,

Anybody want a sculpture?

What an incredibly beautiful and inspiring story! Thank you for sharing yourself and your work!

I only just "found" you today at the Cottonwood Art Festival when I saw your Conversations with Myself, that SO resonated with me in such a deep and profound way. And then in looking at your website, the symbolism, this post, your life, touched me ever more! Thank you, thank you, thank you! All the best!
